Inspired by the song: The Puppeteer and Emerald by Hatsune Miku and Kamui Gakupo Design Process1. I created a general draft of the picture, and made some edits on the spacing. I spelled "Emerald as "Emerand" on purpose to reveal the deeper message which I will discuss at the end of these processes. "I thought of doing bubble letters for "puppeteer" and make "Emerand"have some angles. To connect them I have decided to use the "and" as a weaving thread between the words. For "the", I decided to not make it obvious but still keep it interesting, so I put a small thread ball at the end of the "e". I put a small illustration,a puppet with threads connecting to it, to fill the gap on the right corner. I don't need to worry about the left lower corner because the "and" sign would fill it. There is also a small heart under "Emerand" that fell out of the puppet's chest.
2. I decided to make the "puppeteer" look creepier and more alike to puppets, so I made all the gaps of "e"s smiling mouths, and turn the hole in "p"s also to mouths. As of "t", I created a human shape, with the top part representing a head. I did the same thing for "r", although it is not as human-like. The whole point of this part of design is to create a creepy but also cute feeling. As of "u", it fits in the deeper message of this design. It has the shape of a heart and is hidden behind the "p"s. It also has a darker color that would make people take less notice of it. This "u" shows hidden feelings and thoughts. 3. For "emerand", since it is a kind of jewel, I decided to make it look like jewel too. I made it 3-D and made some cuts on the surface to show the letters. The design is basically rectangular emerands with some cuts, showing that they are all not perfect, but still beautiful. 4. This is the design of the "and" sign. I tried to make the two ends of the symbol meet each other, but not touch. This makes the sign looks more completed. It represents the continuing lope of life, where the death and birth would eventually meet at almost the same place (in similar conditions). The line also gets thinner at the ends, representing the fragile state of a baby and an old person. 5. I tried some colors that would fit the design. I decided to use purple for the letters and the puppet, although in two different warmth (warm for the letters and cool for the puppet). I made the puppet in cool purple to have a melancholy and soulless feeling to it. I chose green for "Emerand", because the original jewel is green. I chose a blueish green for the shades and a yellowish green for the highlights to create the 3-D shapes. For the "and" sign, I try to make it a dark red to blend in with the black background more. I wrote down the names of the colors so I know which ones I am using. 6. In this picture I finished the coloring, and started inking. I putted only a thin layer of pencil crayon on "puppeteer" to have a greater comparison with the background and a thick layer on "Emerand" to make the colors look smoother. I first used a 0.05mm micron pen to outline the words so the outline would not disturb the effect of the colors, and then go into the empty spaces with bigger pens. I putted two layers of ink to decrease the texture the ink makes. 7. This is the finished product. 8-9. These pictures are details of the letters. The message behind this design: This design shows a person that loses his own thoughts and feelings (his heart) for luxury (the jewels). He became a puppet that is controlled by threads and hides his own self behind the masks(u in the word "puppeteer") and even though his heart turned into a emerald, he lost the ability to get it back because he is controlled by the threads. Even the luxury he earned are fake because he did not get "Emerald", but rather "Emerand"(the misspelled word). The goal he tried to work up to, even on the expense of losing his own identity, is nothing but a complete lie.

This project allowed me to explore mediums that I would not usually consider of using. I enjoyed using the fine mediums, but was also surprised at the capability of charcoal. Charcoal allowed me to put down the big ideas without considering a lot about the small details, while the finer pens allowed me to focus more on the flow of lines. My favourite medium is the 0.05 mm drawing pens (which I didn't get to use this time), but a thicker medium helps the flow of ideas in a limited amount of time.
My font name: The Diner Talk Diner talks are awkward, which is why we should communicate through the formation of eating utensils. The difficult part of this is making the utensils stay where they are, since I can't put things on the curved surface of forks and spoons. To solve this I decided to put the end of the utensil under the curved part of another utensil. Doing so also made the parts more fitting together, and can have a more unified effect. "Ellie"
Creating a font is actually very difficult because I need to make the letters harmonize and imaginative. I never learned cursive properly, but it is because of this lack of knowledge that I can create my style with more freedom. For this project I included lopes and narrow intersections at the "l"s. The dull edges of the letter makes the word look softer and more silk-like. The only letter that is not as obvious is the "i", which only had a slight difference in angle with letter "e". I connected the dot on "i" with the body of the letter so the overarching appear is similar to other letters. The black and white contrast is perfect for this kind of font because it creates an elegant feeling. |
