Most photos were taken on my cruise to the Bahamas. Most photos included the ocean, as the color of the ocean is perfect for HDR photography. The orange color of some subjects are brought out by the blue background. I have taken more time editing these photos than designing the shots to gain the full HDR appeal. I partially edited sections of the picture to make sure they have the correct exposure and vibrancy. I was able to grasp the ability to perform partial edits through this project.

Since only my mother and father are present in Vancouver, my ancestry project turned into a Valentine love project. My parents really enjoys being in front of the camera and showing their love and dance skills. My mom is wearing a traditional Chinese dress, while my father is in his formal suit. The comparison of clothes displays that even when my father is usually in China, the connection between them never ceased. Unfortunately I currently don't have my camera, so I have to deal with phone photo quality and tough indoor lighting. I put the pictures into a heart shaped frame to fit the atmosphere of the images.
These images contained some interesting views of where I live, and the creative potential it can bring. The photos ranged from larger scales of representation of where I live to smaller scales of things that symbolized where I live. These photos were taken at ambleside park and my house, and showcased the beautiful yet mysterious factors of my environment. I used mostly a cooler white balance for the images to emphasize the mystery. Some of the photos shows how cosplaying is blended with my life, with the pictures of a Japanese style studio that is connected to my mon's spa salon and my wigs right outside my study. A more interesting perspective of where is live is displayed through these unusual angles.
In the first image, I focused on the branch and left the sun in the center of the image, so it can shine a circular light into the lens and also create a frame at the edges. The branch looked like it is outlined by the sun, which I found very cool. The depth of field of this image is very shallow, making the branches the focus point of the image.
The second image is a self-portrait, with the light shining on the roof and lighting the gap. To take this picture I put a chair in front of the gap, staked more than ten books on there, then put my camera on all the books so the camera can be at the place where I want it to be. It took me more than ten pictures to get the lighting and pose correct. I have realized that the angle of the light is very hard to work with, so the picture still did not turn out as well as I wished; nevertheless this is an interesting place for a portrait, and the overall look is not too affected by the light. The third image is a picture of my friend. I intentionally kept the negative spaces around the figure, so the light would look more important in this image. My friend is wearing a black dress with a lot of white laces, which showed well in the image through the contrast between dark and light. The atmosphere of the image is elegant and pleasing to look at. Model: My mom & Seagulls
I have tried out three methods for taking these shots. For the first photo I wanted to have a symmetric view with the subject far away from the camera. The picture had almost no negative space. The contrast in color between the model and the background makes viewers focus on the details of the image, and can discover the uniqueness of the different trees. The photo is sharp, which enhances the details of the leaves. The second photo is asymmetric with the subject closer to the camera and have more depth of field than the first image. The photo has both an interesting foreground and background, my mother and the seagull. The warm white balance brings the picture a feeling of calmness and create a more dramatic effect. This photo can easily become a movie scene. The third photo is a photo of the seagull and the sun. I liked that the image had the bottom half all black, which made the photo more simple and make viewer appreciate the upper section more. Even though the picture has a lower exposure, the presence of the seagull brings the photo more life. Model: Yume Hanenatsu Character: Nozomi Tojo from Love Live!
Lens: Ultrasonic 24-70mm Camera: Canon 5D Since I really enjoy cosplaying, I decided that my last project should be of a cosplayer. The purple kimono fits the green and yellow background well. For these three photos, I chose three different angles to experiment with the results. For the first image I took the picture at a tilted eye-level. Having the image upright at regular eye-level is boring, but with a tilt the effect of the image changed immediately. This angle is perfect for capturing more vertical details that can be scaled. For the second image, I placed the subject in the middle with an upright lower-level background. To avoid the cliché symmetric view of the subject, I took the picture from 45 degrees left of the subject so even if the subject is centred, the difference in the depth of the sleeves would slightly displace the balance, making the image more interesting. This angle is great for symmetric objects that lacks interest. For the third image, I titled my camera and took the picture from an angle below the subject. This makes the expression of the subject's eye stand out more, as she is looking into the future. The background is tilted just so the object can have an asymmetric placement. This angle is best used to show sentiment of a single subject and make viewers focus on the message behind the picture. Bonus level: I took this picture when I was shooting for this assignment. Although this does not fits into the theme of this project, but I really likes this image and just want to have it here. The cool white balance truly creates a magical effect. First & third used 50 zoom lens, second used 240-700 zoom lens
First photo: rain drop on flower. Second photo: reflection of pine tree. Third photo: water flow on stairs. I tried to experience zoom at a close distance to have a sharp object and blurry background. Through the project I have realized that even a 50 zoom lens cannot focus at a distance very close to the subject, so instead I cropped the image later. In the second image to capture the whole reflection of the tree I switched my lens and got a satisfying result. The third image I focused on the stairs further away rather than the one closest by, again an experimentation of depth of field. Assignment: Slow Shutter Speed
Subject: People All three pictures were taken with different slow shutter methods to have three different effects. The first photo is a photo of my mother driving at night. The focus of the image is not at the person, but at the view out of the window. The rays of right in the window are street lights passing by. The slow shutter speed turns the light into fog and creates a sci-fi feeling. The photo looks more like time travelling than just a person driving. I took this picture sitting still and just let the shaking of the car do the trick. The second photo is a photo of Grace walking while concentrating on her photos. I took this accidentally, but turned out to like it a lot and decided to keep it. The cool color gives it a refreshing look. I took this picture walking with her, so the subject is clear in the picture while the background is blury. The third photo is shot with the motion of turning the camera when shooting, making the background have a circular motion while the subject is mostly sharp. It creates the feeling of travelling through time and makes viewers focus more on the subject. I edited this photo to have a more colorful background, making it look more refreshing. Photo theme: autumn
The first thing I think of autumn when I took these pictures is having a warm color scheme to make viewers feel calm and relaxed. These photos shows a transition from early autumn to late autumn. The first photo is a slow shutter-speed shot with zoom-in. It creates a crisp and interesting feeling to the picture and points out the point of focus, which is the center leaf. I have setted the scene to be a loop of orange flowers surrounding one leaf, showing also a contrast in colors. This photo symbolizes the fast pace that autumn comes and its power in dying green into orange. The second photo is a photo of a pumpkin pie with an owl behind it. This photo shows a symmetric perspective and also a contrast between sharp and blur. The owl in the picture wants to get the pumpkin pie, but it still need to work to get the reward. This photo shows that autumn is not getting close to the end of work, but people still need to work hard to have a wonderful finish. The third photo is a portrait of a scarecrow in front of a tree. It is lifting its right arm to touch the leaves of the tree. This photo is the warmest of all, and shows a feeling of calmness and happiness. This photo symbolizes the joy of harvesting and enjoying this period of relaxation. The forth photo is another picture of a scarecrow. Unlike the pictures before, this picture has a dark and melancholy feeling to it. This picture shows the end of autumn, when no more new goods can be produced until next spring. This photo tells viewers to cherish autumn, or it will fly away before anyone even notice. |
