Inspired by the song: "Bad Apple"
I chose the glass apple as my subject because it creates a transparent convex lens that can reverse the image behinds it. I used dark blue marker to write on the apple because lighter colors do not show well enough. Because of it's rounded shape, the words are harder to arrange. Since my design is pretty simple, I decided to add a complicated gothic background to make the picture look more interesting. The apple is able to reverse the background behind it and magnify it, blending it in with the words on the apple. The choice of display and subject makes the design stand out more overall.

"My wordless sighs are freezing up... and disappearing"
Lyrics from: The Premonition Winter Gave Me For this design, I decided to try out a new dimension and incorporate more hand-crafted elements into the piece. I chose a wider canvas for this piece so I can capture more close-up details and have a symmetric view. I used a lighter color to outline the illustration because it can make a better contrast with the background and makes the design more unique. I used water color, a very textured pen, to color the image. This helps to leave some marks in the coloring rather than just using plain solid color. The coloring is also translucent and duller, which makes the outline pops out more. I altered a lot of transparency to create the final product, including making the line with "disappearing" very hard to find, since it is disappearing. For the first part of the word, I used an effect to create cracks in the words, to make them looks like they are freezing. To frame the illustration I drew snow flakes on two opposite angles, also adding more element into the piece. I will make a parody of the magazine Women's Health, and display it as Men's Health to make people realize the stupidity of the articles in the magazine and how they have no relation with health, but rather all with being skinny. My subject will be photographic and I will use the same typeset font and color as the original magazines, to make my work look realistic.
In this design, the main figure has an extremely skinny body that does not even have any internal organs. The body is a representation of the extreme result of the advices in the magazine. Being skinny requires the sacrifice of health, and in this case the sacrifice of health is enormous. The cover of the Women's Health magazine usually have an ideal image for women, and in this case the extremely skinny figure would serve as a twisted example. I chose a male as my model because it would look more bizarre if a male is set in these barriers of being skinny, and the effectiveness of the parody would increase greatly. Feminine words are changed to masculine ones to fit the idea of the magazine. He is holding a water bottle and wearing a sports suit, but his body does not reflect the actual healthy image people would have after exercise. One of the headlines introducing the method of removing organs to achieve skinniness, and the result is shown through the model. This is criticizing the dangerous methods women choose to pursue skinniness. The overall creepiness yet realistic design is created so women would realize that being skinny is not the same as being healthy, and the crazy methods of reaching the ideal images are completely useless. Possible Headlines: (Believe it or not, these are actually very similar to the original headlines) 1 Healthy, Handsome, and Sexy 2. A flat belly (points to the waist) 3. 100% Natural 4. Q&A: Does removing organs matter? Experts explain the new method of weight losing. 5.Lose all abs in 30 days with no exercise "Lost in space and time"
This design made the ampersand into a pocket watch. The darkest brown is the ampersand; it starts on one of the dark brown blocks, and end on the other. The shape of the ampersand is inspired by the shape of yin-yang in Chinese Taichee, with the two smaller circles to fill the loop. The smaller circle representing time is another smaller clock, representing the meaning of the word. The color of space is lighter and the circle has no decorations because I want to show the nothingness and the fullness of space. The loop above the large circle is the small loop in the ampersand, and is also a strap for the watch. The purpose of this design is to show how time is wasted when people did not realize it. In the large watch, a moderate amount of time is taken by empty space. Another large amount of time is taken by the smaller clock, which symbolizes time used on unnecessary small tasks, omitting the larger tasks necessary for the day. Subtracting these time, the clock only contains half of its original area. The title "Lost in space and time" also showed that people are usually lost in spending too much time in these unnecessary tasks and forgot the bigger picture. The design shows that almost half of the day is wasted on unimportant subjects, and the progress one can make if these times are saved would increase greatly. "I am drenched, I am rain." - lyric from Yoshiwara Lament
Theme: rain I am a conservative person. I appreciated people's suggestions for my last project, but I mostly stayed with my original ideas because I don't think the suggestions worked as well. Instead, I incorporated the suggestions into this new project. This work is a combination of many experimentations that I was not able to use before. Unlike the last project where my colors are similar and black and white, I tried to experience with more color for this project. The major color scheme is blue, but warmer colors are added to brighten viewer's eyes. I also experienced using different fonts and different color of the fonts, unlike the last assignment where I only used one font and one shade of grey. I tested the effect of translucent color with the cloth of the girl and liked the effect of the difference in not only the change of color of the dress, but also the change of the color of the shadow. The illustration is hand-drawn so the lines are not as refined as my last work, but the overall appeal covered the small flaws. I was also able to experiment with a textured background rather than just plain color. The textured background resembles the theme of this piece and creates a stronger effect. Text: Fall in Love ~Autumn is here~
Medium: Prisma Color I chose this line because "fall in love" is a pun for autumn, which I found is quite interesting. The word "fall" consists of trees and fallen leaves, signalling the arrival of autumn. The word "love" has a silky feeling, reflecting the romance of the word. There are hearts at both the start of the word and the end, symbolizing the connection of two hearts. The next line, "Autumn is here", is written with a smaller font to have the effect of a gentle whisper and is also a contrast with the big and complicated font before it. I have presented this piece of design in a heart of leaves, again adding components of both love and autumn to the design. No matter if it is falling in love with a person or with autumn, this piece would fit the theme. |
